Elements of Nature

My group of work for 2022 was a series titled ‘Elements of Nature’. They are an intuitive personal response to the 5 elements – Earth, Fire, Water, Air and Space. These 5 elements were seen by the Ancient Greek philosophers as the building blocks of life, and I wanted to express how movement, texture and colour can abstractly represent the characteristics of each element.

Earth is solid, heavy, rich in colour and texture - our life blood. I am drawn to the rich textures and colours of the earth. Abstracted mountains showing the perception of strength and power

Water captures the fluidity of this element in brush marks, liquid in colour and light.

Fire uses colour and mark making to show how fire can be volatile, busy, hot and fickle, capturing the movement and vibrancy of hot flames

Air has strong flowing movement - turbulent, powerful - choosing a monochromatic palette I wanted to capture the intensity of the Murmuration of starlings incorporated into the movement of air.

Ether is the fifth element that connects to spirituality as well as outer space. I created 2 pieces, one expressing the belief of something spiritual , the other as an abstract impression of the scientific explosion of light and colour connected to gasses in outer space
